The 2026 MLB postseason is here, and the path to the World Series is loaded with familiar contenders, unexpected arrivals, and a few teams carrying serious momentum into October. From the White Sox completing a remarkable turnaround to the Brewers chasing the first championship in franchise history, there is no shortage of intrigue.
The American League wild-card round starts with the Chicago White Sox visiting the Houston Astros. Houston captured the AL West on the final day of the regular season, but it hardly stormed into October. The Astros went just 11-13 in September as their battle with the Texas Rangers dragged to the finish.
Chicago arrives with a different kind of motivation. The White Sox had a chance to win the AL Central before Cleveland surged past them, but reaching this point represents an enormous change from the club that lost 121 games two seasons ago. They have spent the year answering questions about that disastrous season. Now they have an opportunity to make it irrelevant.
Prediction: White Sox advance.
The other AL wild-card matchup renews one of baseball’s biggest rivalries as the Boston Red Sox travel to face the New York Yankees. A chaotic weather weekend created an unusual regular-season finish, with Boston playing Game 162 in Tampa while New York’s finale was canceled. The Yankees consequently enter the series with additional rest and without Boston’s late travel.
More importantly, New York can lean on its pitching. Cam Schlittler, Max Fried and Gerrit Cole give the Yankees enough firepower on the mound to survive any offensive inconsistencies.
Prediction: Yankees sweep in two games.
In the National League, the Philadelphia Phillies travel to Atlanta after an uninspiring regular-season finish. That’s already concerning enough, but their opponent presents an even bigger problem. The Braves won nine of their 13 meetings with Philadelphia this season.
Atlanta has repeatedly found ways to beat its division rival, and there is little reason to expect the matchup to flip in October suddenly.
Prediction: Braves sweep.
The San Diego Padres, meanwhile, may be entering the postseason hotter than anyone. San Diego went 18-6 in September, earning home-field advantage for its wild-card meeting with the Chicago Cubs. That late-season surge carries straight into October.
Prediction: Padres sweep.
That sets up an ALDS meeting between the Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays. New York may survive the opening round, but Tampa Bay spent the season answering every challenge the Yankees presented in the AL East race. Whenever New York seemed to close the gap, the Rays refused to crack.
Prediction: Rays win, 3-1.
The other ALDS brings Chicago’s remarkable season up against the Cleveland Guardians. The White Sox have already exceeded almost every expectation placed on them, but Cleveland overtook Chicago when the division was on the line. The Guardians have also demonstrated exactly the kind of persistence that becomes especially valuable in October.
Prediction: Guardians win in four games.
Over in the National League, Atlanta and the Los Angeles Dodgers provide one of the postseason’s heavyweight matchups. These clubs are close, which makes the Dodgers’ home-field advantage especially important. Expect the series to go the distance before Los Angeles survives Game 5.
Prediction: Dodgers win in five.
San Diego’s reward for advancing is a meeting with the Milwaukee Brewers, and this is where Milwaukee’s pitching begins to take over. Jacob Misiorowski can establish the tone immediately, while the Brewers have enough depth behind him to prevent the Padres’ September momentum from carrying much further.
Prediction: Brewers win in four.
The American League Championship Series then brings Tampa Bay and Cleveland together. The Rays went 5-1 against the Guardians in the regular season, and Tampa Bay has home-field advantage. Cleveland will make it difficult, but the Rays have already demonstrated they can consistently handle this matchup.
Prediction: Rays win in six.
The National League Championship Series could be the postseason’s defining matchup. Milwaukee went 4-3 against Los Angeles during the regular season and enters with home-field advantage. The Dodgers may have the stronger starting rotation, but Milwaukee’s overall pitching depth, especially its relief options, could decide a long series.
This one goes all seven games, with the Brewers finally stopping Los Angeles and punching their ticket to the World Series.
Prediction: Brewers win in seven.
That leaves an unlikely World Series pairing: Tampa Bay against Milwaukee.
Neither franchise has ever won a World Series, guaranteeing that somebody will make history. It also creates a championship series without one of MLB’s traditional major-market powers, something that will inevitably become part of the offseason conversation.
The matchup itself should be far more interesting than the size of the television markets involved. These are the top seeds from their respective leagues, and both have shown they can survive pressure without relying exclusively on overwhelming star power.
Milwaukee enters with one significant advantage. The Brewers won 103 regular-season games, giving them home-field advantage in the World Series. In a matchup this close, those additional games in Milwaukee could matter.
The Brewers’ pitching depth should matter even more. Tampa Bay has enough to make this a competitive series, but Milwaukee has the arms, the home-field advantage, and the postseason path to finish the job.
Prediction: Brewers win the 2026 World Series in six games.
