The Atlanta Braves are closing out their series against the Miami Marlins with momentum on their side after back-to-back wins, including a dominant 9-1 victory on Wednesday night. But while the offense handled business on the scoreboard, one of the biggest moments of the night came from a young pitcher making his long-awaited debut in front of friends and family.
Víctor Mederos finally got his shot with the Braves, and it happened in the city where he grew up.
The 24-year-old right-hander pitched 2.0 scoreless innings in Miami, delivering a calm and effective outing in his first appearance for Atlanta. After years of bouncing between levels in the minors and waiting for an opportunity, the moment clearly meant more than just another appearance on the stat sheet.
Speaking after the game, Mederos opened up about what it meant to debut in his hometown.
“I’ve been up and down for the last three, four years, and never got to come to Miami,” Mederos said, speaking to reporters. “What a blessing it is to be able to come here and play in front of the home base.”
For a player who attended high school in Miami and spent years grinding through the system without reaching this stage, the timing could not have been more meaningful. The Braves called on him during a road series in the city where his baseball journey started, and he delivered a clean outing under the lights.
Braves Make Immediate Roster Move
The Braves quickly adjusted the roster following the win. On Thursday, Atlanta announced that veteran right-hander Carlos Carrasco had been added to the major league roster, while Mederos was optioned back to Triple-A Gwinnett.
“The #Braves today selected RHP Carlos Carrasco to the major league roster and optioned RHP Víctor Mederos to Triple-A Gwinnett,” the team posted on X.
Even with the move, Mederos could still factor into Atlanta’s plans later this season. Pitching depth becomes critical over a long season, and the Braves appear interested in continuing to evaluate the young right-hander after acquiring him earlier this year.
Mederos Still Trying To Establish Himself
Atlanta traded for Mederos from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for international bonus pool money in April.
“The #Braves today acquired RHP Víctor Mederos from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for international bonus pool money, and optioned him to Triple-A Gwinnett,” the Braves announced at the time.
Mederos was selected in the sixth round of the 2022 MLB Draft and spent the first three years of his professional career in the Angels organization. Across 13 career MLB appearances, he owns a 7.90 ERA and a 0-3 record.
Despite those numbers, the Braves clearly saw enough potential to bring him into the organization and give him an opportunity at the major league level.
Braves Continue Strong Start To Season
While Mederos’ debut drew attention, the Braves continue to dominate in the standings.
Atlanta improved to 34-16 through 50 games with Wednesday’s victory and remains atop the National League East. The team has gone 7-3 over its last 10 games and has been especially effective on the road, posting an 18-8 record away from home.
The Braves will finish the series against Miami before returning home for a matchup against the Washington Nationals beginning Friday.
The fast start has been a major rebound after Atlanta missed the 2025 MLB playoffs last season. Through the first 50 games, the Braves once again look like one of the toughest teams in baseball.
