A strange and unexpected incident during a game between the Toronto Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles left outfielder Jesús Sánchez injured after a fan threw a baseball from the stands and struck him on the field.
The unusual sequence unfolded in the bottom of the sixth inning at Camden Yards. Baltimore held a 6-0 lead and had two runners aboard when Sánchez, stationed in the outfield, appeared to gesture toward fans beyond the wall. Exactly what he intended remains unclear. Some observers believed he was simply waving or interacting with the crowd, while others interpreted the motion differently.
What happened next stunned players and spectators alike.
Fan Throws a Ball During Game
A fan tossed a baseball from the stands toward Sánchez. The ball struck him in the area of his right hand and wrist, immediately drawing a visible reaction from the Toronto outfielder. Sánchez was surprised by the impact and quickly favored the injured hand as trainers evaluated the situation.
The Blue Jays later announced that Sánchez exited the game with a right wrist contusion. Fortunately for Toronto, X-rays revealed no fracture, avoiding what could have been a far more serious setback.
Video of the moment quickly circulated online, showing Sánchez reacting in disbelief after being hit by a ball that had come from the crowd rather than from game action.
The Misunderstanding Behind the Incident
As details emerged after the game, the incident appeared to be less malicious than initially feared. According to Baltimore Sun reporter Jacob Meyer, a young fan believed Sánchez was inviting him to play catch. The misunderstanding reportedly stemmed from Sánchez moving or flapping his glove while interacting with the crowd.
The fan, thinking the gesture was an invitation, threw the ball onto the field. Stadium personnel later identified the fan and removed him from the ballpark.
Both Sánchez and Blue Jays manager John Schneider described the episode as an unfortunate misunderstanding rather than an intentional act.
“It was a misunderstanding. I wasn’t trying to play catch right there,” Sánchez told reporters afterward.
Schneider offered a similar assessment, explaining that Sánchez had been interacting with what he believed was a 12-year-old fan.
“He was kinda talking with a, I think it was a 12-year-old kid… kinda going back-and-forth I think in a playful manner,” Schneider said. “Like almost like ‘hey, let’s play catch,’ and I think that the kid took it literally.”
Blue Jays Leave Baltimore With a Split
Even with the confusion surrounding the play, Schneider acknowledged how unusual the situation was.
“Not ideal, first time I’ve seen that,” the manager added. “Balls shouldn’t be coming into the field of play.”
Despite Sánchez’s early departure, the Blue Jays battled back before ultimately falling 9-5 to Baltimore, resulting in a split of the road series. Sánchez finished his day with one hit in two at-bats before being replaced by Yohendrick Pinango.
Pinango provided an immediate spark off the bench, collecting two hits and driving in three runs in just two plate appearances. His performance helped keep Toronto competitive, but it was not enough to overcome Baltimore’s early advantage.
While Sánchez avoided a serious injury, the game will likely be remembered for one of the season’s most unusual fan-player interactions. What appeared to be a simple misunderstanding ended with an injured player, an ejected fan, and a moment that left both teams shaking their heads.
