Team USA stands one victory away from a return to the World Baseball Classic final, but the final step before that stage presents a formidable obstacle. Awaiting them in the semifinal is the Dominican Republic, a lineup widely regarded as one of the most explosive collections of offensive talent in international baseball. Power, speed, and relentless depth define the Dominican roster, with hitters capable of changing a game with a single swing scattered throughout the batting order.
A Semifinal Showdown With Massive Stakes
The Dominican Republic enters the matchup with a reputation as a true offensive powerhouse. Their roster reads like an All-Star team, featuring elite hitters who can overwhelm even the strongest pitching staffs. From disciplined contact hitters to towering power threats, the lineup presents danger at nearly every spot.
For much of the tournament, opposing teams have stepped onto the field as clear underdogs against the Dominican squad. Their combination of talent and depth has made them one of the most feared teams in the entire event.
However, the semifinal against Team USA presents a different dynamic. This is the first game of the tournament in which the Dominican Republic will not be overwhelmingly favored. The reason largely centers on one pitcher who could shift the balance of the matchup.
Paul Skenes Could Be the Ultimate X-Factor

Team USA manager Mark DeRosa appears prepared for the challenge with a strategic advantage on the mound. The ball will go to Paul Skenes, whose presence alone dramatically alters the game’s outlook.
The towering right-hander has rapidly built a reputation as one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball. Recent matchup data shared by DraftKings on X reveals just how effective he has been against several Dominican stars.
Dominican hitters have collectively gone just 3-for-27 against Skenes. That .111 batting average underscores how difficult it has been for even elite hitters to handle his overpowering fastball and devastating secondary pitches.
Seattle Mariners superstar Julio Rodríguez accounts for all three of those hits, going 3-for-6 against Skenes. Outside of Rodríguez, the rest of the Dominican lineup has been largely neutralized. Juan Soto is 0-for-3, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. sits at 0-for-2, Junior Caminero is 0-for-3, and Ketel Marte has struggled to a 0-for-5 mark.
Two dangerous sluggers remain unknown factors, however. Skenes has yet to face Fernando Tatis Jr. or Manny Machado, leaving some unpredictability around those potential matchups.
A Limited Pitch Count, But Huge Expectations
Even with his dominance, Skenes will not have unlimited freedom on the mound. Reports indicate he will work with a pitch count between 75 and 80 pitches in the semifinal.
Still, that should provide enough opportunity for the ace to set the tone early in the game. His previous outing in the tournament showed exactly what he is capable of delivering. Against Mexico, Skenes threw four scoreless innings while striking out seven batters, allowing just one hit and one walk in a commanding performance.
That performance reflected the form he displayed throughout the previous season, when he captured the National League Cy Young Award while leading the league in ERA.
Facing an offense as stacked as the Dominican Republic’s is never simple. Yet if there is a pitcher capable of slowing down a lineup loaded with All-Star talent, Paul Skenes may be the ideal candidate. If his dominance continues on the international stage, Team USA could find itself one step closer to another World Baseball Classic championship appearance.
